This distinguished equestrian portrait depicts Thomas Cholmondeley, 1st Baron Delamere — an English landowner and politician, elevated to the peerage in 1821 — mounted on his hunter horse. Painted in oil on panel around 1839, it served as a study for Calvert’s larger composition The Cheshire Hunt at Tatton Park.
