A beautiful Edwardian cut crystal inkwell with a hallmarked sterling silver hinged lid and collar, dating to 1902.
The substantial square crystal body is wonderfully clear and weighty, with deeply cut geometric decoration to the base that catches the light beautifully. The gently sloping shoulders lead to a simple silver collar and domed hinged lid, giving the piece a very elegant, understated look.
The contrast between the heavy cut crystal and the softly aged silver makes this a particularly attractive antique desk piece. Originally made for a writing desk at the beginning of the Edwardian era, it is now just as lovely displayed in a study, library or amongst a collection of antique silver and desk accessories.
The silver bears hallmarks dating the piece to 1902. There are gentle signs of age and use to both the silver and crystal, entirely in keeping with a piece that is more than 120 years old.
Date: 1902
Period: Edwardian
Materials: Cut crystal and sterling silver
A really lovely, substantial example — and I think this one looks more special and valuable than the Art Deco inkwell because of the hallmarked sterling silver and early date.
